“The Social Network” Nominated for 8 Academy Awards

Fresh off winning four Golden Globe awards including “Best Picture,” The Social Network has been nominated for eight Academy Awards.

The film about the controversial origins of Facebook was nominated in all of the categories it won earlier this month at the Golden Globes: Best Picture, Director (David Fincher), Adapted Screenplay (Aaron Sorkin) and Original Score (Trent Reznor). It also picked up nods for Actor in a Leading Role (Jesse Eisenberg), Achievement in Cinematography, Film Editing and Sound Mixing.

The Academy Award nominations are the latest accolade for the once-maligned film, which has also been recognized by the Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards and the National Board of Review. It’s also been a commercial success, bringing in north of $200 million thus far on an estimated budget of $40 million.

The Social Network is not the most nominated film at the Academy Awards, however, with The King’s Speech receiving 12 nominations during Tuesday’s live announcement. The winners will be revealed on February 27.
